Special Reading for Recovering Grace - Written By Anisa
Mindset creates reality.
When I was first given the title of this collection of writings, I interpreted it as “to recover something lost” but we can’t reclaim something that was never ours to give. Grace is the impossibly intricate, mind bending, antithesis of our humanity—-to be given what we do not deserve and to be protected from the things we desperately do.
How could I begin to write about this topic, when I this moment I feel as if I fallen so short of grace. How silly of me.
So, I sat in my chair and thought to myself, well, what if the title actually implies something different. What if the word “recover” doesn’t mean to regain but to rehabilitate. “Recovering Grace” is drag our tattered, broken bodies into the overflowing, medicined pools of God’s grace. The pools which envelope us in things we do not deserve; married to the mercy that withholds the things we do.
Recovering. Grace.
I am astounded at the love God has for me to want to heal me. To still call out to me from my pit—where I have layed in darkness—and to unfurl the hands that I have wrapped around me own neck. No one has placed the albatross on my neck to show my guilt and shame, but myself. God has chased after me for many years, always offering a healing that only he can give—one drenched in grace.
In moments like this, where my spirit seems to only know pain, I feel like Paul of Silas. Begging God to remove the messenger of the enemy sent to torment me…but instead I am met with God’s ever sufficient grace. Continuing to show His love for me even when I cowardly crawl back into the pit.
But, when I call out to him, He is there. When I run away, He keeps pace with me. I hide into the deepest crevices into the deepest parts of my mind and He is there. He sits with me, offering a recovery through His grace. Candle in hand and comfort in His eyes. I do not deserve God’s grace—-but that’s not the point.
I see it like the man Icarus who flew too close to the sun. Sometimes the heat of fire is just as intimidating of being thrown in it—-but luckily for us it is mercy that keeps me from being destroyed and it is grace which heals me.
Thank you.
