Even Jesus Couldn’t
Scripture
“And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.”
-Mark 6:5–6 (KJV)
Ponder This
Jesus came to His hometown, Nazareth. They knew Him - His family, His past, His background. But familiarity replaced faith. They said, “Isn’t this the carpenter?” (Mark 6:3)
They reduced Him to what they remembered instead of recognizing who He was. Offense entered. Expectation dropped. And unbelief became the ceiling.
The problem wasn’t power - Our Father hadn’t changed, but miracles require agreement, and they had none. Unbelief is a mindset that says, “Nothing different will happen.” It hears promise but rehearses limitation.
Today, it sounds like, “I have no expectations.” That feels safe, but it is not neutral, it is a strategy to lower faith and shut down hope. The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy, and he often does so by first stealing expectations. When expectation dies, faith struggles to rise.
They had access to Jesus but not faith to receive from Him. We can do the same when past disappointments shape our outlook and we quietly stop making room for Our Father to move.
Faith shifts the atmosphere. Faith says, “Even here, Our Father can.”
Reflection
• Where have I lowered my expectation?
• Have I called unbelief “being realistic”?
• What area needs faith to rise again?
Prayer
Our Father, remove every ceiling of unbelief in my heart. Where familiarity, disappointment, fear, or guarded thinking has lowered my expectation, renew my faith. I refuse to live without expectations. I choose to believe You are able and moving on my behalf. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
