Listening Like Jesus – A Heart That Heals

Listening Like Jesus – A Heart That Heals

Scripture:

“So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.” – James 1:19 (NKJV)

“Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” – James 5:16 (NKJV)

Devotion:

In a world full of noise, where everyone wants to be heard, few people are willing to truly listen. Yet, as disciples of Christ, we are called to a different posture, one that is swift to hear, slow to speak, and patient in love.

Listening is more than just hearing words; it is an act of love and ministry. When we listen well, we create a safe space for others to process their pain, to release burdens, and to discover God’s healing power. It takes humility to hold back our words and simply be present as someone shares their struggles.

Jesus was a master at this. He asked questions, listened deeply, and let people speak their hearts. Whether it was the woman at the well (John 4), Nicodemus (John 3), or His own disciples, He allowed them to process their thoughts, their doubts, and their wounds. He didn’t rush to correct or preach, He gave them room to unload their pain, and then He led them toward truth and healing.

Likewise, when we choose to listen first, we create an opportunity for the Holy Spirit to work. We don’t have to fix everything, we simply need to be present, encourage, and pray. James 5:16 reminds us that when we pray for others, God heals. Our role is to support, encourage, and intercede, trusting that God is the One who brings true healing.

Reflection Questions:

• Do I listen to understand, or do I listen to respond?

• How can I create a safe space for others to process their pain?

• Am I patient enough to pray for others and trust that God will bring healing in His time?

Prayer:

Lord, teach me to listen with a heart like Yours. Help me to be swift to hear and slow to speak, creating space for others to process their pain. Give me patience to encourage and pray, knowing that You are the One who heals. Use me as a vessel of Your love and peace, and let my presence reflect Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Closing Thought:

When you listen with love and pray with faith, you become a disciple who helps others discover, process, and heal, not by your power, but by God’s. Keep listening, keep praying, and trust that God is at work.
